Ed Swires-Hennessy was a member of the Government Statistical Service (GSS) of the United Kingdom for 38 years and is now an independent consultant and teacher. His specialist area is the presentation of data in all types of media. He teaches in the Professional Development Centre of the Royal Statistical Society and within government departments. He has had a keen interest in electronic dissemination of statistics for over ten years. This website was created as a direct result of a monthly feature about statistics on the net in the GSS in-house magazine, STATus, and carries all the reviews. In addition to the published reviews, Ed has carried out others, by request, for local, national and international organisations: all of the reviews are written from a user perspective.
Ed was a consultant to the Project Board of the National Statistics website . He lectures on the subject of web design and jointly chaired a workshop in Neuchatel, Switzerland, for webmasters of European statistical offices in February 2000.
He was the editor of the statistics part of the Welsh Assembly Government website - from its inception until March 2002. Since then he has advised various organisations on their website design from Department of Manpower in Singapore to the Food and Agriculture Organisation in Rome, from the National Statistical Office in Malawi to that in Hungary.
Ed served on the Council of the Royal Statistical Society from June 2001 to December 2007. He was awarded the West Medal by the Society in 2003 for his contribution to dissemination, teaching - locally, nationally and internationally - and his Internet work. Though he has left the Society's Council, he is still a Director of the trading arm of the Society with special responsibilities for the operation of the Professional Development Centre.
He can be contacted via e-mail, by snail mail to Statistical Consultancy, 9 Arlington Close, NEWPORT, NP20 6QF, United Kingdom.
